WORK AND PLAY BEHIND THE IRON CURTAIN

20.06.2014 — 24.08.2014
GRAD: 3-4a Little Portland Street London W1W 7JB
Organized by: GRAD: Gallery for Russian Arts and Design / www.grad-london.com
Project partners: Moscow Design Museum and ZIL

MOSCOW DESIGN MUSEUM – PARNTER of the exhibition.
The exhibition opened on 20th June 2014 in GRAD Gallery, London. The project is organized within the UK-Russia year or culture 2014.

The exhibition showcases objects that filled the home of a Soviet citizen. It is an idealized picture of the soviet world, compiled from pieces of industrial and graphic design, photographs and video chronicles. Performances, interactive events and digital media resources will complement the display, revealing what life was like behind the Iron Curtain.

Over 50 pieces form the Moscow Design Museum collection are presented in the exhibition. All of them were manufactured in the USSR and together form a picture of the fashions and styles of the period: from the ‘cosmic’ design of the Chaika vacuum cleaner and Molnia clock to copies of the Technical Aesthetics magazines, published by VNIITE starting from 1964. The famous ZIL factory is represented through photographs, taken on the manufacturing floor.
